Equality Settings in Revit Dimensions

Our company continues the tradition of sharing information not only about our products but also about how to facilitate your everyday tasks in Revit. Below, our structural engineering maestro Valensas shares an insight about equality settings in Revit® dimensions.

In working with various clients, I’ve noticed there are some things that for experienced Revit users look simple but for beginners might be very frustrating.

Recently I’ve received a couple of questions from different users about how to get an Equality Formula in dimensions when they have several of the same dimensions on a dimension chain.

Let’s take a look at the settings we have in Dimension properties. First of all, we have the Instance parameter – Equality Display, which defines if the selected dimension will show Value, Equality Text, or Equality Formula. In the example below, you can see the different results of using these options.

Note: For Equality Text to take effect, the dimension chain should have only equal values. The same logic should be used for the Equality Formula option.

In Revit, Equality Display is by default set to Value. You have to choose other options for selected dimensions. When you select Equality Text or Equality Formula, what is displayed is defined in Type properties of Dimension Style.

Also, you can define how witness lines should look in that area.

And that‘s it, just those couple of simple things and you’re good to go forward with your documentation in Revit.
