During the past few months, we’ve been working closely with Scandinavian structural engineers who deal with structural and architectural walls in Revit®. This collaboration has resulted in significant updates to Cut Opening in its latest release.
Companies like MOE, Ramboll, and COWI have already been using Cut Opening for a while to automate the process of inserting openings for doors and windows in structural models to exactly match those elements in the linked architectural model.
Please join our webinar on Thursday, October 26th to learn more about these NEW FEATURES!

When structural and architectural wall models are matched together in a jiffy using Cut Opening! |
Working with these companies has brought new ideas to the table, and now we’re pleased to show the latest developments in Cut Opening. It’s more robust than ever before!
- Insert Openings even if there’s an Air Gap
Cut Opening can now insert structural openings even if an air gap exists.
To do this, you just need to set the maximum distance between the structural and architectural walls in the Door/Window Opening Configuration dialog:
- Join
Openings
If you’ve got two openings near each other, they can be joined to form one large structural opening. For example, if you have adjacent windows, you can make one structural opening to cover both:
To configure this, define the maximum distance between the two windows. And then you can join the two openings:
You can join windows with windows, doors with doors, and even doors with windows. To combine door and window openings, tick the checkbox in the dialog to allow it:
Here’s an example of joined door and window openings:
- Extend
Openings to Structural Wall’s Base
An opening can be extended to the bottom plate of the wall, if necessary. Usually we have the situation in which architectural walls are higher than structural walls. To extend an opening, just tick the box in the Door/Window Opening Configuration dialog:
Hope this overview will help lots of structural engineers working on such tasks!
